Bolt Restricts Inter-Country Orders After SA and Nigeria’s Online Conflict
The Bolt company has taken action after becoming entangled in an online conflict between users in Nigeria and South Africa.
On Thursday, social media platforms were flooded with fake ride orders as both countries engaged in an online skirmish, using Bolt’s services to fuel their rivalry.
Nigerians celebrated their “victory” after retaliating against South Africans who initiated the Bolt challenge, leading to widespread disruptions for the ride-hailing company’s drivers.
In response to the incident, Bolt issued a statement to the BBC, acknowledging the impact on their driver-partners in both Nigeria and South Africa.
“We understand the impact this situation has had on our driver-partners in Nigeria and South Africa,” Bolt stated.
The company further explained, “Bolt is aware of the fake ride request incident between some people in Nigeria and South Africa. Following a thorough investigation and the implementation of enhanced security measures, we have addressed this issue swiftly by restricting inter-country ride requests.”
Bolt also confirmed that those responsible for the malicious activity have been identified and blocked from using the Bolt app.
